Meteor Detection
Our most recent project is a meteor detection unit. We are using a Chrysler digital car radio from the late 70's to 90's. It is very well shielded, available for cheap and if you have a little skill it can be made to detect meteors. Here are a few pictures of Bill and Dick Castle working on the unit. We got the idea for using this radio from a Canadian website
Sky Scan Science Awareness Project.
Another excellent resource for meteor detection is the
American Meteor Society
. Their paper
The Radiometer Project
is a good primer on meteor detection by radio. Another good website for radio astronomy is
Sam's Meteor Echo
page.
For software we can use
SkyPipe
or
Colorgramme for RMOB
another free software program. To locate radio transmittters use the free program at
http://phoxes.com/
We are using a
Winegard antenna
.We are still testing the unit and will build an antenna if this does not give us the results we expect.

The radio did not work, so it was opened.
Cleaned the on/off/volume switch & tested the unit again.
Wires, wires everywhere!
Bill makes some final connections.
Dick Castle is all smiles- the radio works.
The finished unit in an oak case made by Bill.
Bill passes the cables thru the wall for the rotor and antenna.
Bill works on the connections to the antenna rotor.
We installed a Winegard 4 element beam antenna.
The antenna can be angled and rotated.
Dick & Jerry Moore work on 2nd Chrysler radio.
Dick does some diagnostics on second Chrysler radio.
